Greetings from Las Vegas!

This will be a rather long post, but I promised you, it will be worthy of your time as I recapped what happened last week in National Publicity Summit, and what YOU can apply to your business! 

As I am writing this post for you in Las Vegas International airport, the feeling is so unreal in a way that I am working on the road since my former corporate life! But this time around is much better, as I am living one of my dreams: spread the message which  was divinely given to me to benefit the multitude!

Well, this post is not about me, it’s about you though! Read on:

To bring my message to the larger audience, I chose to approach the mainstream media.    So I decided to apply to attend the National Publicity Summit in NYC months ago.

I had phenomenal week in NYC – with other 99 achieved professionals from all walks, all with a burning message in their hearts to give to the world; willing to pay the price (resources, money, time and efforts) to get the message out!  More importantly, they humbled themselves to emerge into this new era of main streams media to learn, contribute, build relationship, and be rejected face-to-face at the spot! That is what 97% of the people would not even dare to do! I respect that a lot! Considering some of them are in their 60s and 70s, very reputable in their own social circle! When I asked them WHY they do what they do, the answer is almost identical: they don’t want to leave this world with regret!  

Question to you: What kind of price you wiling to pay to get your message out?

All applicants were screened before we even could pay the fee to attend the national publicity summit. Then we went through 3 months of media training with coaches and consultants to work on our pitches, and materials.  In the week right before the summit,  we then received the media list about 100 of them, chose the outlets we’d like to give our 1-1 pitch.

Question to you: what have you done to get yourself equipped and trained for your business before you present to your potential buyers?

The summit started with some awesome training, and practice sessions with coaches again to sooth our nerves out before the real deal.

The following 3 days, the schedule worked something like this:

There were 20-30 media people from national TV, magazines, radio shows, journalists for each morning and afternoon session.  The host of the summit welcomed and asked the media people in each session some questions to further prepare for the attendants in this last minute, such as the likes and dislikes of each media outlet.  Attendants at the moment were flipping their own notes upon the research for those media they have chosen to pitch right after this panel session.

Question to you: What have you done to get to know your prospects/buyers/readers/audience? 

One of the most valuable experience for me is to network with the fellow attendants!  In this week, I have heard the most fascinating stories and most brilliant ideas in my life! We formed a special bond as we went through this emotional ride ups and downs in this journey.  We helped each other in the media room when we saw whoever needed encouragement does at the spot, or celebrate with each other as we got booked for interviews! Or I did my best, to share and teach about marketing funnel set -up.   I had been invited lunches during the week after some of them figured I could share some tips for online marketing.

Question to you: What have you done to contribute while you are still learning? 

Do you see the income streams?  

On the very last day of morning and afternoon sessions, for whatever reason, I didn’t do well in the morning session.  I got 4 “No” from different media outlets right from the start, their answer was “We don’t do this kind of message or story..”  I was feeling quite down and had to re-group myself for a moment.   Then I figured out later in the day, almost all attendants encountered the same situation.

After lunch break, the host welcomed in the very last batch of the media panel.  This time, instead of asking them questions to help attendants out to start with, he asked randomly 2 attendants a question: “Tell me who in the audience, your fellow attendant has helped you the most in this week for your message and business?”  Well, it just happened one of them point her finger to me and shouted out my name!  I thought, “Ok, goodwill is recognized, that’s a good thing.”  But then, the host said, “Since this is the last session of the summit, we are going to invite Kelly, voted by the fellow attendant to come forward, and pitch to the media panel now!”  He continued before I could think of anything “Kelly, would you accept this invitation?”  The crowd applauded like crazy before I opened my mouth…

Question to you: How would you handle the situation like that? I was reminded right at that moment about “Leaders feel the fear, but they do it anyway!”

I finally opened my mouth and said something totally against my mind “Sure, it will be an honor!”  The other voice inside of me screamed “What on the earth are you doing? Do you have a clue what to say?” Well, I figured I had about 20 steps to think about that!

Now for those of you never pitched to the media outlets, here is a note: in order to pitch effectively, you need to really know the target audience of each media, so you tailor your message to different angle to each media.  So to stand front of 30 different media and try to pitch them all is tough enough itself to say the least!  Not to mention the pressure came with the audience, and the consequence followed after that.  If I failed, I failed bad because everyone would remember me from now on, and I even don’t have to try to pitch them 1-1 afterwards, and so does my reputation to my fellow attendants!  So the pressure is ON!

So I went froward, tried to articulate something in very general way in less than 20 steps of time…got the microphone in my hands, morning’s “failure” was haunting me at the same time…then I chose to pitch them from the angle of fresh news of that day “Hefty student loans….”  then I gave them my pitch about Passion to Profit, Passion Filled Career with some stats I researched.

Audience applauded excitedly….I was about to get back to my seat, the host stopped me and said “Kelly, I know you have a very personal story of it, why not you shared with the panel in 3 sentences?”  I was stunned, but went on sharing my own story of overcoming odds in life and live a life of value…which touched thousands of souls, etc.

By now, the audience was wild!

Panel started to critique my pitch.  It was nerve racking…..some said it was good, some said I should tell the story first (well, in that morning I was told the opposite way.), some said they are now ready to book me for interview…some said I didn’t show enough passion…I took it all in and did normally what people do: I felt bad and crushed, as I only focused on the negative feedback, rather than positive ones.

I then went to restroom to re-group, and head to media room to stand in the line, and ready to pitch on those outlets I signed up for.  While I was waiting…there were about 15 to 20 fellow attendants came to me, either tears in their eyes, or gave me a big hug, and said “Kelly, thank you for sharing your story, because I was sexually abused, too…”  And it included some very influential MEN!  We ended up tearing up and laughed together…for me, that’s the best reward! And surprisingly the afternoon session went very well for me, got many positive feedback and some bookings already!

My Own Thanksgiving History

I mentioned in the video those “hard time” I went through, my very 1st Thanksgiving turkey…and part of my family’s calling to this Land of Freedom is to sow the seeds of hope, today one year later, I am doing exactly what I said last year.  I just finished my 7-year project-the book which is based on my own story: “A Little Girl Called Grace” .  Its main focus is to bring HOPE to those of us who struggled or still struggling with the scar of our past, whether emotionally, physically, or financially; there truly is a LIGHT in the end of the tunnel!

It will be launching in the early 2012 with some very exciting events, you can sign up here to stay tuned for that!

Today I have countless things to be thankful for, and I found it is very “profound” for me to write this post for you, as most of you are in USA reading this content.  I am very thankful as my life was spared by my American pastor 14 years ago around Thanksgiving in Taiwan, he and his lovely wife arrived my apartment in time before I cut my wrist….what if they didn’t?!

14 years later I am living in this land to do my part to sow the seeds of HOPE!  Can’t you say my Thanksgiving History is divine orchestrated?!

Entrepreneur Business Tips

It’s the last week of October.

I know, when I was looking at the calendar today, and trying to tie some loose ends up, my kids reminded me “Mom, less than 2 months, we are going to visit grandparents in Switzerland for Christmas! Isn’t that exciting?!”

I was like “Gee, 2 months ONLY?!” A moment of “reality” set in to say the least!
Many of you asked me about how do I plan for project, business, team-building..etc.

So instead of being freaked out for “time is flying away”, how about we start our 2012 NOW as entrepreneurs!

You know, while most of people out making their new year resolution in December, you already steps ahead.

There are many ways to plan ahead, but for me to gain crystal clarity, I love using “reverse engineering” strategy.

Here is what I meant:

Let’s say you desire to achieve certain financial goal by the end of October 2012. For the sake of illustration, let’s pick a round number : $120K income.

Then you think about what kinds of income streams you have to bring in that $120K?
If you have 3 products/services, what are their price points?

For example, you have an e-book for $47, a course for $297, a coaching/consulting services of $997, etc.

Now you will have to work out the number such as how many $47, $297, and $997 products and services you need to sell in order to get to $120K?

Maybe something looks like this:

So you know you will need to sell 116 e-books, 50 courses, and 100 clients of coaching/consulting in the next 12 months.

From here, you ask yourself: “How many units per month you will have to sell?”
And don’t forget you will need to plan time for marketing before your launch, so the first 3 months or so, you may not making much profit yet. In that case, let’s say the rest of 9 months left, you will need to sell:

As you look at the above table, it doesn’t look that “GRAND” to achieve your goal, does it? Since we break them down to monthly goal.

The next step will be considering how many leads/prospects you need to bring in order to sell that 13 books, 6 courses, and 11 services. Nobody can answer that question for you, except you get your sleeves up, get to work, and TRACK your conversion rate.

For example, if your conversion is 10%, it means you bring in 100 people, 10 people become your buyers so forth.

Then now you will have to think what kind of marketing method you will be doing, in order to bring in your desired outcome. Direct mail, Video marketing, Local Workshops, Speaking..etc. So you can count your cost. Obviously the better you know your target market/audience, the higher conversion rate you will have, the less marketing dollar you will have to spend, the easier you can achieve your desired result.

After the above exercise, then you can build your marketing funnel upon it.
You know those goodies: Optin offer, sales page, email follow-up series, flyers design, shopping cart, social media integration…etc.

You can modify the above example to fit your business model, if you are Network Marketer, then focusing on your ratio of recruiting rate, auto-ship volume, team training materials ordering, etc.

Can you see if you lay it all out like we just did, there is better chance that you will keep yourself focused on the target, plan out the time to achieve each milestone?

And we even haven’t scratched the surface yet about how you can plan a killer funnel for your marketing, and product creation.
This is how top producers do, PLAN it all out and TAKE massive actions!

As USA is honoring 9/11, thought I share a personal story with you.

About 3 months before 9/11 happened, my husband was working for The Ritz-Carlton Jamaica.  We were in the process of obtaining visa to FL, USA, as he was transferred to a new position at The Ritz-Carlton Sarasota, FL.  We were really looking forward to it, especially we started hearing some gun shot happened in our front yard of some drug dealers…(Yup, Jamaica was awesome for tourists, but not safe for family living there…)

I was pregnant with our 2nd child, so ready to get to FL to have better medical care.   Then 9/11 happened…I remember some of my American girlfriends there also working at the Ritz called me up, screaming and crying…I couldn’t understand what they were trying to say to me…they finally managed to ask me to turn on TV.

I was speechless and dropped the salad bowel in my hand, dropped my knees down to the ground, and started praying…

As my understanding, there was a planned meeting for all Ritz general managers to be in Twin Towers, but for some reasons, the meeting was cancelled. So over 50 executives’ lives were spared that day! However, I couldn’t help feeling the pain for those who were there and their families….

I then held prayer meetings over the phone, at the living rooms of different homes, we prayed! (Interesting thing is later on some of my girlfriends reminded me that I am not even an American, but they were touched by God’s love through me..)

Our working visa to USA was then delayed, due to the event….so we stayed in the hotel for 2-3 months while we were waiting…however, I started to encounter unusual bleeding, and that was surely not good for the early stage of pregnancy.  We concerned about our baby’s life, and planning for the possible options for flying back to Europe for medical care if that even was a timely option or not…

So we dropped to our knees daily! For USA and for our unborn baby! Thank God we arrived in FL in Oct 2001, and our baby boy was born in FL.  The only USA citizen in our family! 

America, was built on the foundation of gratitude and thanksgiving! As the forefathers started from scratch, fought against all odds to establish the foundation. As the dollar bill  prints “In God We Trust”.  America was prosperous at all sides, because she sent out helps and missionary to Asia and many other places to spread seeds of hope.  Sadly to say, in last few decades, as people got used to corporate culture, told what to do, the ability to think and to create has been buried…hence slowly, from “freedom” to “slaves”, most of Americans are just getting by, rather than thriving above in life! 

9/11 might knock down the Twin Towers, but 9/11 also awoke the true spirit of “UNITED STATES of AMERICA”!  As we mourned over the loved ones we lost 10 years ago, isn’t it more important for us to step up, to reclaim the ability to think, to create, to unite, to love our neighbors once again? Love what American fashion icon-Ralph Lauren said in his exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey: “ When I am in Russia, or in China…I am an ambassador of USA, I am just like President Obama’s assistant, different kind of representative for America.”   That’s what we can do as Entrepreneurs! Pursuit the excellence in all we do, United We Stand!
